The Whale Route stretches over 850 km along the Côte-Nord in Quebec. Also known as Route 138, it is easily recognizable by its blue signs. It is renowned as the site of an annual gathering in the summer and fall of 13 marine mammals that come to feed in our Saint Lawrence River.
The region is rich in boreal forests, small villages, active wildlife, and coastal landscapes with a captivating and dramatic atmosphere. A place that deserves to be visited with consciousness and the Leave No Trace Pledge principles in mind.
From Quebec City, we packed our bags and hit the road in the 2024 Subaru Solterra AWD – Luxury package in Two-tone Smoked Carbon.
Our 7 days itinerary
Photography and adventure enthusiasts, we were delighted by the unique landscapes of Côte-Nord. Without further ado, here is our 7-day itinerary.
Quebec City to Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park (209 km)
What if I told you that it is possible to explore the Lower St. Lawrence underwater? It’s a unique experience in these icy waters, but quite enjoyable once your body adjusts!
- Fast charging location: 162, Rue des Jésuites, Tadoussac (QC), G0T 2A0
Les Grandes-Bergeronnes, Les Escoumins (32km)
Sea kayaking at Mer et Monde, where we took an afternoon excursion of about 3 hours. We were able to observe a humpback whale, porpoises, and a small minke whale. What’s magical about kayaking is that you can hear the whales’ breathing in total calm with just the sound of the waves.
- Fast charging location: 162, Rue des Jésuites, Tadoussac (QC), G0T 2A0
Attitudes Nordiques (215km)
Imagine falling asleep and waking up to the sound of whales and a view directly over the St-Lawrence River. A peaceful campsite accessible via a trail through a boreal forest makes you feel alone. Plus, you have a lounging area to chill and make a bonfire at the beach.
- Fast charging location: 20 avenue Chapais, Baie Comeau (QC), G5C 2S6
Réserve faunique de Port‑Cartier–Sept‑Îles (366 km)
Off the beaten path, a little find with another incredible view of the valley. We didn’t have time to linger too long, but it’s on our list for our next visit!
- Fast charging location: 21 Avenue Parent, Port Cartier, G5B 2G4
Iles des Perroquets (234km)
A bonus stop where we had the chance to observe puffins on Île aux Perroquets, a small island in the Mingan Archipelago, a protected natural site renowned for its unique biodiversity and spectacular rock formations. We spent the night in the former keeper’s house, which is now a cozy accommodation.
- Fast charging location: 878 A, Chemin du Roi, Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan, G0G 1V0
Why choose the Solterra, an electric vehicle?
First of all, did you know that the name Solterra is a combination of the two Latin words: Sol “sun” and Terra “earth”? A clever choice when considering its environmental qualities.
During our 2000 km journey, we had the opportunity to test the Subaru in various terrains and climates, and here are some observations:
1. Respect of the environment
The Solterra AWD is 100% electric, meaning it emits no greenhouse gases while driving. This helps reduce your carbon footprint and protects the environment as you explore.
2. Electric AWD
An electric vehicle with all-wheel drive, ensuring excellent handling and optimal performance in all weather conditions.
3. Fast charging
The advantage of Côte-Nord is that there are many charging stations compatible with fast charging. In less than an hour, we were able to charge 70-80% of our vehicle while we took a food break.
4. Comfort and technology
Very spacious to accommodate 3 girls, camera equipment, camping gear, and still enough room to take a nap in the back seat.
However, a major difference to note is that when going on a road trip with an EV, it is essential to consider that reaching a destination takes more time. But it also allows us to slow down our pace of life and travel differently.
À la prochaine!
And then it’s already time to head back to Quebec! Honestly, I could have stayed another week, but adult life calls me home. I hope this inspires your next trip to Côte-Nord!
Bea 🙂
